springerin is a magazine of criticism and theory on contemporary culture. It is published quarterly and addresses a readership that perceives cultural phenomena as social and political ones. springerin reports on current events and trends in the culture industry and describes their conditions and meanings.
Since 1995, when the first issue was published by an editorial team headed by Georg Schöllhammer (joined in 1998 by Christian Höller and Hedwig Saxenhuber), a special focus of the magazine has been art scenes in Southeast Europe. Current developments in the post-communist states are documented and critically examined by international writers, theorists, critics, and artists.
Another thematic constant of springerin is the “Netzteil” section, where internet specialists and activists explore the applications and potential of new technologies. The “Artscribe” section reviews selected international exhibitions, events, and publications. Each issue has a central theme, with essays by international experts discussing the positions, motifs, and discourses surrounding the art-theoretical, socio-political, and pop-cultural issues of the day.
The print edition of springerin is published in German and is distributed internationally. On the website, some articles are also available in English.
